This Grand Award winning project, located in the Charlestown Navy Yard of Boston, Massachusetts, was one of the largest historic renovation projects of the mid-eighties in the United States. Altgelt & Associates designed and provided the construction administration for the plant-scape of two dramatic, ten story interior atriums. The firm also designed a large, publicly accessible roofgarden, as well as the streetscape of the two historic buildings that were being adapted to modern uses. All the various planting areas of this project, other than the streetscape, were designed to make use of a subterranean flood irrigation system. Altgelt had first employed this type of irrigation system while working in Germany, and has since utilized it on various large-scale institutional projects. Below is another photo:
